State of the Arts
Conference 2020

State of the Arts
New formats & Audiences
Online Conference
1/11/2020

Statements, round table discussions, online exhibition

Part of the Freiraum Festival & Summit 2020
In partnership with Goethe-Institut's Freiraum Platform
Under the auspices of the German Presidency of the EU

The format of the conference was developed through the application of Common Lab's tools. Thanks to the Mobile Studio - a self-developed mobile studio which combines the possibilities of a small tv-studio and video-conference platform, the conference was broadcasted live from Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki. Public attending the conference online was able to contribute to the discussion via chat. The Mobile Studio was set within the Mobile Stage, which provided a shared environment for the overall Festival, since part of the stage travelled to Brussels and became part of the Freiraum Festival programme there.

The conference included statements and round tale discussions with international experts, as well as artistic interventions that were selected as contributions to the conference themes and the exploration of new formats.

Online Exhibition

Alongside the experts’ statements and discussions, artists were commissioned or selected via an open call to present works that showcased novel formats and conceptualised the digital environment, as both a creative tool and a presentation platform. This curated online exhibition is an in-depth review of themes and artistic methods developed by artists who address the above discussions, and functions as a case study that responds to the project’s topics. As an open platform, "State of the Arts" has built an international community of artists and invites them to reflect on the new reality today.

Go to our Resources page to view the talks, discussions and artistic interventions.
